Spring Festival is My Favorite Holiday

How do people celebrate their most important festival in a different country? In China, the spring festival is one of important holidays, so we celebrate the last day of the old year and the first day of the New Year. It is also a custom and tradition in Chinese Folklore. Both the Han majority and Ethnic Minorities celebrate this holiday. It shows us that the spring festival not only a historical holiday in China, but has also become more and more popular.

The spring festival is the busiest and special festival for every Chinese person. All cities are filled with a joyous atmosphere. People will clean the house at the end of the last year, and then decorate with some red ornaments. We hang two big Chinese lanterns in the eaves of our house. A famous Chinese proverb says” Good things come in pairs”. It means more and more lucky things will come. In order to make the holiday’s atmosphere, the Chinese government will put a lot of flowers around the streets. It gives us a feeling that we are living in the New Year. More and more people would like to come out their house to visit their relatives and look at the flower show. Children will set off fireworks together throughout the day. In addition, the huge discount in the stores will attract everyone to come shopping and to buy some necessities for their family.
The warm atmosphere is not only in the streets, but also in the houses. People make a big and delicious dinner on the last
day of the old year, which is called New Year’s Eve. Normally, on New Year’s Eve, every main street is a blaze of light, but there is hardly anybody in the street. Everyone tries to come back from every corner of the country to join the family dinner. Before we have dinner, we will serve food to our ancestors. Chinese families have kept this ceremony throughout the generations. Then, the elders cook many traditional foods, such as Chinese hand made dumpling, spring rolls, rice cakes, noodles and some seafood dishes. My favorite food is rice cake, which is a very traditional food in Chinese culture. We always make it round because in china, it means the New Year will not lack anything.

Moreover, every New Year, kids will get money from their families. For the normal family, the adult will give a new one hundred bill in a red envelope to their children. It means a new and good beginning of the New Year, and everything should go step by step from the beginning. This kind of custom also expresses a deep expectation from their families. Children will understand it when they grow up. Friends and some relatives always visit each other after the first day of the New Year. Everyone deeply understands people like to stay with their parents on the first day. After the first day of the New Year, they will meet together and talk about some of the last year, and then give each other many wishes for the New Year.

Overall, during the Spring Festival, smiles always appear on everyone’s faces. When the Spring Festival is coming, that means spring is coming and everything will wake up and become alive. Spring is a season of hope-seeding. It contains people’s complete wishes. That is why it has became a very important holiday in Chinese culture, and why it is so important to me.
